Taking an Exam

Student Example 1

Starting ACT Prep with Long-Term Planning

Profile: A 10th grade student beginning early prep. They have strong academic skills but don’t know how to structure their study time or prioritize which sections to work on first.

 

60-Minute Session:

10 min: Review diagnostic test results and discuss initial score goals
15 min: Break down the structure of the ACT and discuss each section's content
20 min: Build a study schedule together based on the student’s extracurriculars and availability
10 min: Teach a note-taking method for tracking recurring mistakes and strategies
5 min: Assign one section to complete before the next session and outline how to review it

Targeting Weak Areas in SAT Math

Profile: An 11th grade student preparing for the SAT who excels in Reading/Writing but consistently underperforms in the Math section.


60-Minute Session:

● 10 min: Review a recent Math section the student completed independently
● 20 min: Re-teach 1–2 key concepts (e.g., systems of equations, function rules)
15 min: Work through similar problems together while reinforcing pacing techniques
10 min: Build a mini-reference sheet for formulas and strategies
5 min: Reflect on focus strategies and how to stay present during long sections

Practicing Test-Like Conditions with Full-Length Sections

Profile: A 12th grade student taking the SAT/ACT in the next few weeks. They know the material but need to build test stamina and sharpen timing.


60-Minute Session:

5 min: Warm-up with breathing and quick review of pacing targets
45 min: Complete a full Reading or Math section under timed conditions
10 min: Review missed questions and reflect on time management and note-taking effectiveness during the section
