A 7th grader who enjoys reading but struggles to explain what they've read, summarize text clearly, or identify deeper themes in literature

 

60-Minute Session:
10 min: Read a short passage or excerpt together aloud
20 min: Use comprehension questions to guide discussion around summary, character motivations and predictions
● 15 min: Introduce a literary element (e.g., symbolism, tone, or figurative language) and identify examples in the text
● 10 min: Student practices summarizing and analyzing the text in their own words

5 min: Review key insights and set one follow-up reading goal

Strengthening Close Reading Skills

Profile:

A high school sophomore who struggles to identify important information when reading and often misses subtle clues about character development, plot progression, or theme.


60-Minute Session:

● 10 min: Introduce close reading strategies and annotate a short passage
● 20 min: Identify figurative language, imagery, and key vocabulary in context
● 20 min: Discuss how selected quotes support broader themes and tone
● 10 min: Student writes a short paragraph analyzing one section using the strategies learned

60-Minute Session:

10 min: Skim a past reading selection and identify key themes and character arcs
● 20 min: Practice answering short-answer questions based on excerpts using
evidence from the text
● 20 min: Review literary elements and devices that are commonly tested (tone,
symbolism, diction)
● 10 min: Review missed questions and discuss test-taking strategies for retention
and recall
